Shopping for Earthquake Victims

In pairs we each had $100 to go online and buy items to help a family that had been affected by the latest earthquakes.  The scenario we used was:

  • There are four people in the family and one cat, a mum, dad and two children (boy and girl)
  • They had no water, sewage and phone lines are not working
  • They have electricity
  • It costs $5 to get it delivered, this needs to come off the $100
  • They can not leave the area as the roads are still closed
The children went online and shopped at the warehouse and will present what they thought would be helpful purchases with the class.

Chanel's Kakapo Report

Kakapo Report
                     By Chanel Hansford

Do you know what a Kakapo is. A Kakapo is a large green bird, that is endemic to New Zealand.

Kakapos are mammals, they are also a type Of bird that is endangered. Kakapo can live from 58 to 90 years old.

Kakapo have enormous wings but are unable to fly as they are to heavy.

Kakapo are vegetarians, that means they only eat plants and fruit. Kakapo live in the rainforest in Fiordland, Pearl island and Codfish island.

Kakapo didn’t use to have predators so they didn’t have to fly. They hide and use camouflage, they use the bushes, trees and mossy trees.

Kakapo live on their own and are very quiet and aware of enemies/predators. When a male bird spots a female bird the male will do a strange dance for the female. Kakapo is a maori word that means night parrot. Kakapo are endangered because there is less than 100 left in New Zealand.

I learnt a lot about the kakapo when I was reading about it. I also learnt that there was less than 100 left in New Zealand, we need to go out into the forest and help all the kakapos get together and breed to make kakapos not endangered.

Lucy's Dolphin Report

Dolphin Report
By Lucy

Dolphins don’t have jaw muscles so they swallow their food whole. Dolphins eat fish, squid, octopus & shrimp. Dolphins have hunting techniques. Some fish hide in the sand and the dolphin eats it  using powerful sonar pulses to catch the fish.

Dolphins have a skin that’s rubbery it’s light gray.Dolphins are warm blooded so they are mammals. Mammals make their own heat.

Dolphins live up to 50 years.Bottlenose dolphins can weight up to 200 kg.

Dolphins live in deep water so you can’t see them when you're on the shore.

I enjoyed learning about dolphins, The best part was that dolphins don’t have jaw muscles, they eat their food whole. I liked learning about dolphins and found out a lot of things.

Benjamin's Report about Sharks

Shark Report
By: Benjamin.A.Lin

The Shark is an amazing animal, but various species of Shark have become endangered due to fishing, nets and shark fin soup.  Sharks are graceful marine life hunters and mostly spends it’s time underwater.

Occasionally there would be news about an oil spill and marine life being killed.  Fishermen normally catch sharks for shark fin soup.  Sharks are quite vicious sometimes but mostly don’t eat humans.

The shark has many features for example ridged teeth.  Each feature does a different job, for example the tail flicks the shark forward propelling it through the water.

You would normally find sharks in deep parts of the oceans.  The shark’s main source of food is fish.  Wobbegong sharks are not sleek or graceful but are masters of camouflage.  Great white sharks on the other hand are pretty much the opposite.
Sharks have a sensor organ called an electroreceptor behind their head.  Sharks have adapted to their fins adapting control perfectly swimming along.  As well as fish, the shark also eats many other species of sea life including baby sharks.  This is called cannibalism.

Sharks have an amazing sense of smell, they can smell blood over a mile away!  Sharks are not very good parents they will eat their young if necessary.  The scientific word for eating young is cannibalism.  A shark has a special sensor organ on the back of its head called an electro receptor, which detects the movement and vibrations of prey.  With its electro receptor the shark can even find food in the sand!

The shark is becoming endangered so make a difference by not polluting the sea!!

Ashton's Snake Report

Snake Northern Rivers[edit]

Report
By ASHTON JAKSIC

Snakes are part of the Lizard family.  Snakes are one of the most interesting creatures I have ever seen.

Snakes are reptiles they are cold blooded.  They like the warm sun and have scales.

The world’s biggest prehistoric  snake was called titanoboa it lived about sixty million years ago. This giant was over 13m  long and weighed over 1100 kilograms. The biggest snake found recently is an Anaconda that was 10 metres long and weighed 400 kilograms. The Garter snake has been ...

Snakes eat rats, mice, birds and worms.   Most snakes live in hot deserts and forests.

Snakes main adaptation is to live life  with no legs, arms and ears.

The venom of a King Cobra is  venomous enough to kill an elephant in one bite.

As you can see snakes are one of the most interesting animals in the world!

Thomas' Snake Report

SNAKES
By:Thomas Fogden

Snakes are small to large carnivorous reptiles.

Snakes are reptiles, this makes them cold blooded. They have ear holes to help them hear.

Snakes eat rats, mice, small birds, worms, larvae etc.  Snakes live in burrows, on trees, under leaves and holes in trees.

Snake characteristics are:scales all over their body, 300 small vertebrate in their back, internal ear holes, forked tongue and protective eyelids.

Snake adaptations are that they have powerful bites, speed and camouflage.  They can camouflage in leaves, sand, wood and rocks.

Jaw dropping facts are: one bite from venom has enough power to kill 5 elephants, snakes can grow up to 26 metres, some Snakes crush their prey.  Snakes have flexible jaws to eat prey bigger than their head, snakes smell with their tongue.

Hi there,

My name is Kate Morgan and I am a researcher for children’s television show, What Now on TVNZ2.

What Now are currently on the hunt for outgoing and passionate Kid Presenters for 2017 in the Auckland area. I was wondering if there might be anyone between the ages of 6-12 years that a teacher or principal at your school might be able to suggest who is passionate about:

·         Coding
·         Magic
·         Crafts
·         Music
·         Science
·         Film making
·         Exercise
·         Building things
·         Baking
·         OR ANYTHING ELSE

We would love if you could please share this flier with those children who might be interested in submitting an audition tape via YouTube (introducing themselves, telling and showing us about what they are passionate about in no longer than one minute) by next Monday 28th November!

Mia's Takahe Report

Takahes
By Mia Tsai
Do you know what a Takahe is?  A Takahe is a New Zealand bird.  Takahes are flightless and is endangered

Takahe is a type of bird.  Found by Dr Geoffrey Orbell that takahes are not extinct.  Takahe’s fossil bones were first found in 1848.  Takahes are very endangered.  If some New Zealanders see them people will have to move them.

Takahes have two short legs.  A short beak.  Green and blue feathers.  Takahes have a green back and a blue body.  They also have a really big bill.  Takahes are really strong.

Takahes usually eat 15.5 kg a day.  They like to eat tussock seeds,  and other kinds of seeds when it’s available.  In winter when there is not much seeds,  they go the forest for shelter and mainly eat starchy rhizomes from green fern.

Takahes have green and blue feathers for it’s back.  Red feet which are very strong.  Takahes have massive bill to crack seeds.  Takahes are really strong.

Takahes were first thought to be extinct and now they are endangered.  Takahe's fossil bones were first found in 1848.  They were then rediscovered 100 years later by Dr Geoffrey orbell. Takahes are hunted by Stoats.

Takahes are safe but endangered, we need to keep them safe from predators and keep them safe from being extinct.
